2026 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X: The Frontier Built to Leave the Pavement

The 2026 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X is the Frontier for owners whose truck regularly leaves the paved road. It is the only 2026 Frontier with an electronic locking rear differential, often called a rear locker. It is also the only one with steel skid plates for the fuel tank and transfer case. Under the hood, the PRO-4X has the same 310-horsepower 3.8-liter V6 as the rest of the lineup.

It suits the driver here in Central Indiana who drives muddy dirt roads and trails. If your 4x4 driving is mostly snowy roads and a gravel driveway, an SV 4x4 has the same part-time 4x4 system for less money at launch. Shop for a Frontier at Ed Martin Nissan of Fishers whenever you're ready.

PRO-4X at a Glance

These key numbers show what the PRO-4X can do and what it cost at launch:

Drivetrain Part-time 4x4, 2-speed transfer case, rear locker
EPA fuel economy 16 city / 20 highway / 18 combined mpg

Which Frontier Trim to Choose

Which Frontier Trim to Choose

At launch, Nissan's suggested retail prices, before destination and handling, put the PRO-4X at the top of the 2026 Frontier Crew Cab lineup.

TRIM DRIVE BED MSRP AT LAUNCH
S 4x2 5-foot $33,550
S 4x4 5-foot $36,550
SV 4x2 5-foot / 6-foot $36,190 / $36,690
SV 4x4 5-foot / 6-foot $39,490 / $39,990
PRO-X 4x2 5-foot $38,570
PRO-4X 4x4 5-foot / 6-foot $41,870 / $42,370

The PRO-4X comes only as a Crew Cab. The King Cab is offered on the S trim only.

Deciding which trim fits you comes down to three questions.

First, do you need 4x4? If you don't, the S and SV come in 4x2, which means two-wheel drive. The PRO-X is built only as a 4x2. If you do, the S 4x4 is the lowest-priced Crew Cab 4x4 at launch. The PRO-4X is the only PRO trim with 4x4.

Second, how rough does your driving get? For bad-weather driving, the SV 4x4 adds a drive mode selector to its part-time 4x4. Against a 5-foot-bed SV 4x4, the PRO-4X's extra $2,380 at launch buys the rear locker plus off-road shocks and all-terrain tires.

Third, which bed do you want? Only the SV and PRO-4X offer a 6-foot bed on a Crew Cab. The two bed lengths compare like this, measured with a spray-on bedliner:

CREW CAB BED (WITH SPRAY-ON BEDLINER) 5-FOOT BED 6-FOOT BED
Length at floor 58.9 in 73.3 in
Bed volume 39.6 cu ft 49.2 cu ft
Width between the wheel wells 44.5 in 44.5 in

The 6-foot bed adds about 14 inches of floor length, and the room between the wheel wells stays the same.

For a closer look at every trim, see our 2026 Nissan Frontier overview.

What the PRO-4X Adds and Shares

What the PRO-4X Adds and Shares

The Frontier PRO-4X carries more than the SV 4x4 or PRO-X, but not all of it is exclusive. Side by side, the equipment that differs line up like this:

EQUIPMENT SV 4X4 PRO-X PRO-4X
Drive Part-time 4x4 4x2 only Part-time 4x4
Drive mode selector and Hill Descent Control Standard Not offered Standard
Rear locker Not offered Not offered Standard
Skid plates Front Front Aluminum front; steel oil pan, fuel tank and transfer case
Shock absorbers Twin-tube Bilstein-brand Bilstein-brand
Tires 265/65R17 all-season 265/70R17 all-terrain 265/70R17 all-terrain
Heated front seats, heated steering wheel, remote engine start Optional Standard Standard
Intelligent Around View Monitor with Off-Road Mode Not offered Not offered Optional

What only the PRO-4X brings in off-road hardware is the rear locker and the steel fuel-tank and transfer-case skid plates. The rear locker helps keep the truck moving when one rear tire loses grip.

The PRO-X also shares these PRO-4X features:

  • 17-inch PRO aluminum-alloy wheels
  • LED fog lights
  • Black overfenders, the flares over the wheel arches
  • Lava Red tow hooks

The SV 4x4 also has a 2-speed transfer case and two front tow hooks.

Compared with an SV 4x4, the PRO-4X comes standard with:

  • A 4-way power passenger seat
  • Lava Red contrast interior stitching and accents
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control, a package item on the SV
  • Nissan Intelligent Key with push button ignition, a package item on the SV
  • Tow/Haul mode, which the SV can have too

Engine and 4x4 System

Engine and 4x4 System

Against the SV 4x4, the PRO-4X's only 4x4-system difference is its rear locker, and the PRO-X has no 4x4 at all. Engine and transmission are identical across all three, while the transfer case and fuel economy are where they part ways:

POWERTRAIN PRO-4X SV 4X4 PRO-X
Engine and output 3.8-liter V6, 310 hp, 281 lb-ft 3.8-liter V6, 310 hp, 281 lb-ft 3.8-liter V6, 310 hp, 281 lb-ft
Transmission 9-speed automatic 9-speed automatic 9-speed automatic
Transfer case 2-speed (2WD, 4HI, 4LO) 2-speed (2WD, 4HI, 4LO) None (4x2)
4LO ratio 2.717:1 2.717:1 -
EPA city / highway / combined 16 / 20 / 18 mpg 17 / 21 / 19 mpg 19 / 24 / 21 mpg

Part-time 4x4 means you switch between 2WD, 4HI and 4LO. Low range (4LO) is for slow, steep or rocky going.

The PRO-4X's EPA estimates run 1 mpg below the SV 4x4's in city, highway and combined driving. The V6 runs on regular unleaded.

The PRO-4X's drive mode selector has terrain modes including Rock and Sand. Hill Descent Control helps hold a slow speed down steep slopes. Hill Start Assist helps keep the truck from rolling back on a hill. The PRO-4X's off-road display shows pitch and roll, meaning how far the truck tilts front to back and side to side. It also shows 4x4 engagement and differential lock status.

Towing, Payload and Clearance

Towing, Payload and Clearance

Next to the SV 4x4, the Frontier PRO-4X is rated to tow and carry a little less, but it has more clearance under both differentials.

RATING PRO-4X SV 4X4
Towing At least 6,270 lb with either bed 6,880 lb (5-foot bed); 6,760 lb (6-foot bed)
Payload, 5-foot bed 1,220 lb 1,310 lb
Payload, 6-foot bed About 1,100 lb 1,200 lb
Gross Combined Weight Rating 11,960 lb 11,960 lb
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating 6,012 lb 6,012 lb
Approach / departure / breakover angle 32.3° / 23.0° / 19.6° 30.6° / 21.9° / 20.0°
Clearance under front / rear differential 9.5 in / 9.8 in 8.6 in / 9.0 in

The Gross Combined Weight Rating of 11,960 pounds covers the loaded truck and the loaded trailer together, passengers and cargo included. Before you hitch up a boat for a day at Geist Reservoir, check two limits. The loaded trailer must stay within the PRO-4X's towing rating. The whole rig, truck and trailer together, must stay within the combined rating.

The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the most the truck itself may weigh with people and cargo aboard. Payload for the 5-foot-bed PRO-4X tops out at 1,220 pounds, counting everyone in the cab and everything in the bed.

Approach angle is the steepest slope the front of the truck can meet without scraping. Departure angle is the same measure at the rear. Nissan measures the PRO-4X's departure angle without the optional hitch receiver. Breakover angle is the sharpest crest the truck can drive over without its middle touching.

On a dirt road or trail, the extra clearance under both differentials helps the truck clear ruts and rocks.

A Class IV hitch receiver with 4-pin and 7-pin trailer wiring is optional on the PRO-4X and comes in the PRO-4X Convenience Package. Trailer Sway Control is standard.

Cabin, Technology and Safety

Cabin, Technology and Safety

Every 2026 Frontier PRO-4X comes standard with heated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and a Remote Engine Start System with Intelligent Climate Control.

The Zero Gravity front seats are trimmed in PRO-4X embroidered cloth. The driver's seat has 8-way power adjustment with 2-way power lumbar support. PRO-4X carpeted floor mats are standard.

The PRO-4X has a 12.3-inch NissanConnect touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. It also has a 7-inch Advanced Drive-Assist Display and four USB ports (two USB-A and two USB-C) for the front and rear seats.

Nissan Safety Shield 360

Every PRO-4X comes with Nissan Safety Shield 360, which includes six features:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Blind Spot Warning
