Choosing Your 2027 Frontier

Choose the cab first, then the bed and the drive, because those choices decide which 2027 Frontier trims are open to you.

King Cab or Crew Cab

King Cab or Crew Cab

The King Cab comes only as an S with a 6-foot bed. As a 4x2, it is the lowest-priced 2027 Frontier and has the highest payload rating. The Crew Cab S 4x2 launched $1,400 higher and adds a fifth seat and 7 more inches of rear legroom, but its bed is about 14 inches shorter. Choose the Crew Cab if adults ride in the back seats often; it is also the only cab on the SV, PRO-X and PRO-4X.

5-Foot or 6-Foot Bed

5-Foot or 6-Foot Bed

Among Crew Cabs, only the SV and PRO-4X offer the 6-foot bed, priced $500 above the 5-foot bed at launch. It adds 13.8 inches of cargo floor and 9.1 cubic feet of box volume. But the truck grows 13.9 inches longer, and on the SV it gives up 80 pounds of payload as a 4x2 and 110 as a 4x4. Pick the 6-foot bed for long loads if your garage has the room.

4x2 or 4x4

4x2 or 4x4

Four-wheel drive added $3,000 at launch on the S and $3,300 on the SV, while the PRO-X comes only as a 4x2 and the PRO-4X only as a 4x4. Every 4x4 Frontier is part-time, switched on through a 2-speed transfer case, and every 4x4 above the S adds Terrain Mode.

Snowy winters here in Hamilton County are the strongest case for 4x4 on a truck that rarely leaves the pavement, because the extra driven wheels help it pull away and climb on snow. Stopping on ice still comes down to tires and speed. On cleared roads the 4x2 is the better buy. An S or SV 4x2 costs less and rates 2 MPG better combined than the same truck as a 4x4. With the 5-foot bed, a Crew Cab SV 4x2 also tows 120 pounds more and carries 170 pounds more payload than a 5-foot SV 4x4.

S, SV, PRO-X or PRO-4X

S, SV, PRO-X or PRO-4X

Every trim gets the same standard driver-assistance features, so the trim you pick decides comfort, technology and trail hardware. Both PRO trims can also add Traffic Sign Recognition and the Intelligent Around View Monitor through packages. The SV brings a bigger touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a power driver seat and access to SV-only packages such as the Sport Edition. The SV 4x2 with a 5-foot bed launched $2,600 above an S Crew Cab 4x2.

The PRO-X makes heated front seats and a heated leather steering wheel standard and adds keyfob remote start. It launched $2,400 above an SV 4x2 with a 5-foot bed, though that SV can get both heated items through the All-Weather Package ($700) and add Remote Engine Start for $415. The PRO-X also brings Intelligent Key, LED fog lights and all-terrain tires.

With the Sport Edition, an SV came in $1,410 below the matching PRO trim, as a 4x2 against the PRO-X or as a 4x4 against the PRO-4X with the same 5-foot bed. It brings the off-road look and all-terrain tires, without the heated seats both PRO trims have as standard or the PRO-4X's locking rear differential.

The 5-foot PRO-4X launched $3,300 above the PRO-X and trades 3 MPG combined and 210 pounds of payload for 4x4 and its off-road hardware.

Which Trim Fits Which Buyer

Which Trim Fits Which Buyer

A 4x2 King Cab S is the pick for the lowest launch price and the most payload, while a Crew Cab S or SV fits a budget with people in back. The PRO-X is the most fully equipped 4x2 Frontier, and the PRO-4X is the one for trails.

No Frontier seats more than 5, so a family that needs a third row should look at a three-row SUV such as the 2026 Nissan Pathfinder. It seats 8 as standard, holds 80.5 cubic feet of cargo behind the first row and tows up to 6,000 pounds, and its SV 2WD launched at $39,990.

Engine, Drive and Fuel Economy

Engine, Drive and Fuel Economy

Every 2027 Frontier uses the same 3.8-liter V6 and 9-speed automatic, so the drive system is the only powertrain choice you make. These details apply to every version:

Powertrain 2027 Frontier
Engine 3.8-liter VQ 24-valve V6
Horsepower 310 hp at 6,400 rpm
Torque 281 lb-ft at 4,400 rpm
Transmission 9-speed automatic
Drive Rear-wheel drive (4x2), or part-time 4x4 with a switch-operated 2-speed transfer case
Fuel Regular gasoline
Fuel tank 21.11 gallons

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the 2027 Frontier by drive, and the PRO-4X sits lowest:

EPA Rating (MPG) City Highway Combined
Every 4x2 version 19 24 21
4x4 versions except the PRO-4X 17 21 19
PRO-4X 16 20 18

On a full tank, those combined ratings work out to roughly 440 miles in a 4x2, 400 in other 4x4 versions and 380 in a PRO-4X, before towing or winter driving shortens them.

Towing, Payload and Bed Size

Towing, Payload and Bed Size

Nissan rates the strongest-towing 2027 Frontier at more than 7,100 pounds. Towing ratings change with the cab, bed and drive, and these are the ratings for 4 specific versions:

Configuration Towing Rating
King Cab S 4x4, 6-ft bed 7,000 lb
Crew Cab SV 4x2, 5-ft bed 7,000 lb
Crew Cab SV 4x4, 5-ft bed 6,880 lb
Crew Cab SV 4x4, 6-ft bed 6,760 lb

For any other version, ask our sales team for its towing rating.

Payload, the weight of passengers and cargo the truck itself can carry, also varies by configuration:

Configuration Payload Rating
King Cab S 4x2, 6-ft bed 1,590 lb
King Cab S 4x4, 6-ft bed 1,430 lb
Crew Cab SV 4x2, 5-ft bed 1,480 lb
Crew Cab SV 4x2, 6-ft bed 1,400 lb
Crew Cab SV 4x4, 5-ft bed 1,310 lb
Crew Cab SV 4x4, 6-ft bed 1,200 lb
Crew Cab PRO-X 4x2, 5-ft bed 1,430 lb
Crew Cab PRO-4X 4x4, 5-ft bed 1,220 lb

All versions share a 6,012-pound gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), the most the loaded truck may weigh, so heavier configurations such as a 4x4 or a 6-foot bed carry less payload.

Towing adds a second limit, the 11,960-pound gross combined weight rating (GCWR): the most the loaded truck and loaded trailer may weigh together. With a 7,000-pound trailer, that leaves 4,960 pounds for the truck, its passengers and its cargo. When it pulls a 7,000-pound trailer, even the lightest 2027 Frontier, an S King Cab 4x2 at 4,385 pounds empty, has room for no more than 575 pounds of people and gear. Without a trailer, every version carries far more, from 1,200 to 1,590 pounds, as the payload table above shows.

Bed, Cab and Size

Bed, Cab and Size

The King Cab and the 2 Crew Cab bed lengths compare like this:

Measurement King Cab, 6-ft Bed Crew Cab, 5-ft Bed Crew Cab, 6-ft Bed
Seats 4 5 5
Rear legroom 26.2 in 33.2 in 33.2 in
Bed cargo length 73.3 in 59.5 in 73.3 in
Box volume 49.6 cu ft 40.1 cu ft 49.2 cu ft
Wheelbase 126 in 126 in 139.8 in
Overall length 210.2 in 210.2 in 224.1 in

Both bed lengths are 19.4 inches deep and 44.5 to 61.4 inches wide, and every tailgate locks. Front legroom is 42.3 inches in both cabs.

Off-Road Hardware

Off-Road Hardware

The PRO-4X is the 2027 Frontier for trail driving, and it adds this hardware to the PRO-X's equipment:

  • Electronic locking rear differential: locks both rear wheels so they turn together.
  • Terrain Mode Selector: a choice of 4 modes (Road, Rock, Snow and Sand).
  • Hill descent control: holds a slow, steady pace on steep downhills so you can concentrate on steering.
  • Suspension: Bilstein off-road shocks.
  • Underbody protection: an aluminum front skid plate and steel underbody skid plates.
  • Ground clearance: 8.6 inches, the most of any 2027 Frontier.

Other 4x4 versions get part of that list: hill descent control is standard on every 4x4, and Terrain Mode comes on the SV 4x4, including the Sport Edition and Dark Armor, but not on the S 4x4. All 2027 Frontiers ride on an independent double-wishbone front suspension and a rigid rear axle with leaf springs.

Safety and Technology

Safety and Technology

Every 2027 Frontier has this driver-assistance equipment:

  • Ahead: Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Intelligent Cruise Control
  • Behind: Rear Automatic Braking, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and rear sonar
  • Lanes and blind spots: Blind Spot Warning and Lane Departure Warning
  • Driver and headlights: Intelligent Driver Alertness and High Beam Assist

Every version also has a 7-inch driver display. Each trim's standard equipment includes these items:

Trim Selected Standard Equipment
S NissanConnect 8-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; 4 speakers; manual air conditioning; manual driver seat; cloth seats; urethane steering wheel; 2 Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports; 16-inch wheels
SV 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; 6 speakers; power driver seat; 17-inch wheels

PRO-4X PRO-X equipment, plus the trail hardware listed under Off-Road Hardware

Traffic Sign Recognition and the Intelligent Around View Monitor come in packages on both PRO trims. Our explainers on Nissan safety and technology show how Nissan's driver-assistance systems work.

Warranty and NHTSA Ratings

Warranty and NHTSA Ratings

Nissan covers every 2027 Frontier with these warranty terms:

Coverage Term
Basic 36 months/36,000 miles
Powertrain 60 months/60,000 miles
Corrosion perforation 60 months/unlimited miles

Not rated is not a poor score, and new results post to NHTSA.gov as testing finishes.
