A Simple Feature That Could Save a Life: Rear Door Alert
One of Nissan's most thoughtful innovations began not in a boardroom, but from a real-life experience. Invented by two Nissan engineers who are also mothers, Marlene Mendoza and Elsa Foley, the idea for the Rear Door Alert system was born after one of them accidentally left a pan of lasagna in the back seat overnight. That simple mistake made them ask, "What if that had been something far more important?"
This led to the creation of a simple but brilliant innovation that is now standard on all four-door Nissan models. The system doesn't use cameras or sensors to detect objects; instead, it uses intelligent door sequence logic.
How the Alert Sequence Works
- System Activation: The system activates the moment you open a rear door before starting your trip. It remembers that the door was used.
- Visual Reminder: When you reach your destination and turn off the vehicle, if you haven't opened a rear door again, a notification will appear on your instrument panel display reminding you to "Check Rear Seat for All Articles."
- Audible Alert: If you exit the vehicle and close the doors without opening a rear door, the system progresses to the next level. It will emit a series of six distinct, gentle chirps from the vehicle's horn—a sound designed to be noticeable enough to get your attention as you walk away.
It's a crucial reminder to check the back seat for your most precious cargo-be it children, pets, or even just your laptop. And because Nissan understands every trip is different, the system is easily configurable. You can choose to have only the display alert, keep the horn alert active, or temporarily disable it for a single trip, all through the settings menu in your driver's display.
