Which exit you start from depends on where in Anderson you are. Exit 226 is the Scatterfield Road exit and the one most people use, since Scatterfield is the city's main commercial road. Exit 222 picks up traffic from the west side, and Exit 234 serves the State Road 32 (SR 32) and Anderson University side of town. All three put you on I-69 heading southwest toward Fishers.

One local quirk worth knowing if you navigate by highway signs: east of Exit 222, SR 9 and SR 67 both run along I-69 as it passes the south side of Anderson, so a single stretch of interstate carries three designations at once. If the signage looks like it is telling you three things, it is.

Anderson is the county seat of Madison County and a principal city of the Indianapolis metro, at its eastern edge, which puts it in Central Indiana. It is close enough to Indianapolis to commute and far enough out to have its own economy, its own downtown, and its own way of doing things.

Mounds State Park holds ten earthworks built by the Adena-Hopewell people, with the Great Mound believed to date to roughly 160 B.C. Archaeological work suggests they were gathering places for ceremonies, positioned so astronomical alignments could be observed from them. The White River Trail runs about two miles along the river just north of downtown, past Shadyside Lake with its pickleball courts and canoe launch, the fields at Derby Downs Park, and the playground at Alex Pike Park. Rangeline Nature Preserve has trails through wetland and woodland. Killbuck Employee Park covers 214 acres off Range Line Road and opened in 1956 as a recreation park for workers at the local factories. It is still in use.

Downtown, the Paramount Theatre and the Gruenewald House are the two landmarks people name first. Harrah's Hoosier Park Racing and Casino on Dan Patch Circle runs live harness racing from April through November.
