Grinding Noises A harsh grinding noise when you brake is a sign that one or more pads have completely worn out. Once the friction material covering has broken down, the metal pad will grip the rotor when you brake. This metal-on-metal contact will produce a grinding noise as the pad damages the rotor surface.
