We have chosen some of our best museums that are guaranteed to thrill and amaze both tourists and locals alike. 3 of the Best Museums to Visit Near Indianapolis, IN more Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum This museum opened in 1956 covers the history of racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It also includes exhibits, vehicles, and trophies from racing events around the world. Over the years, the museum outgrew its original building and is now housed in a substantial modern building within the Speedway oval itself. There are numerous tours available, including the amazing "Kiss the Bricks" tour which gives you a 30 minute narrated lap around the world-famous oval. For a unique experience, you can also book the Basement Collection Tour. This tour was previously available to VIP guests only, and it has an incredible collection of vehicles from pre-war motorcycles to winning sports cars to modern Indy vehicles. For the motoring enthusiast, the Speedway Museum is a must-visit. It is located at 4750 W 16th Street and is open daily. Indiana War Memorial This incredible memorial rises over 210 feet and towers over a complex of five blocks and features the largest collection of war memorials outside Washington DC. The museum spreads over three floors and is capped with a Shrine that features blue stained glass windows that illuminate a huge granite altar. Reliefs carved into the walls cover the history of American participation from WWI to the present. The main floor follows the history of the US in wars in the Middle East and also features exhibits on 9/11 and the battleship USS Indianapolis. The basement level features artifacts from the American Revolution to the present and is filled with dioramas, wars, and profiles of individuals. This solemn and enlightening museum is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 9 am to 5 pm. Indiana Medical History Museum For a fascinating insight into medical history, and Indiana's contributions, this museum is definitely a place to visit. The building itself was once a hospital, contains the oldest pathology lab in the US. The facilities have been faithfully preserved and maintained just as they were when the hospital was operating. The museum is staffed with enthusiastic volunteers, who can give you a huge amount of interesting information about the building, its history, and all the exhibits. This museum is located at 3045 W Vermont Street and is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm.
